In an interview Harry Styles commented that the song was lyrically about slipping back into old ways, becoming a person he didn't want to be again and trying to be a better person. Harry Styles also said that "Falling" is, "That feeling of kind of being overwhelmed, you know you can feel like you’re drowning sometimes." In this cover Alex really connects with the song giving an emotional performance. The song has been covered with multiple layers of guitar rather than piano as in the original.

According to King, the title is derived from, and was inspired by, a spiritual written by Sam Cooke and J. W. Alexander called "Stand by Me Father," recorded by the Soul Stirrers with Johnnie Taylor singing lead. The third line of the second verse of the former work derives from Psalm 46. In this cover Alex demonstrates his range demonstrating his falsetto. The cover is quite a twist on the original with multiple layers of guitar including some slide guitar.
